Tax Manager (Indirect & Sales Tax)

The Tax Manger – Indirect & Sales Tax reports to the Tax Director and will lead our Indirect & Sales Tax team as we experience continuous growth in the U.S. This role is responsible for managing all indirect taxes in the US for an inbound company owned by a foreign entity active in more than 15 US States. The successful candidate will work with various internal and external stakeholders and professionals in carrying out his or her responsibilities.

What you’ll do to be sixt-cessful:

  • Sales Tax
  • Manage monthly, quarterly and annual tax returns preparation for sales & use tax, gross receipts tax and short-term vehicle rental excise taxes. Review or prepare work to ensure timely submission of monthly returns and payments, including set-up of new jurisdictions and closure of accounts with taxing jurisdictions.
  • Manage and coordinate cash needs with Treasury to ensure proper funding for electronic payments.
  • Serve as primary contact to coordinate with International Accounting to ensure relevant GL entries are properly recorded before monthly closing dates.
  • Monitor tax rate changes and new products and ensure communication to appropriate internal personnel for timely updates to the accounting and car reservation systems.
  • Determine filing requirements and proper tax treatment for doing business in new jurisdictions.
  • Ensure tax setup is done properly in all systems.
  • Determine proper sales tax categories of existing and future products for implementation in Sovos Tax Engine.
  • Analyze risks and refund opportunities for prior years. Suggest improvements to processes for Use Tax reporting.
  • Property Tax
  • Manage the preparation and/or review of annual tax returns for tangible personal property tax. Includes research of new jurisdictions
  • Monitor the receipt of assessments and bills to ensure timely payment of all items
  • Manage the appeal of valuations as needed
  • Analyze company growth patterns to make recommendations regarding the need for external software. Oversee vendor selection & implementation
  • Business Licenses
  • Manage the research of requirements for new jurisdictions, as needed
  • Manage annual renewal process
  • Audits and Notices
  • Manage all responses to non-income tax notices in a timely manner to minimize penalties and interest assessed to the Company
  • Manage all non-income tax audits, including primary contact with auditor, determining exposures & risks, managing the data collection and response to Information Document Requests
  • Fixed Assets
  • As needed, manage the process of loading fixed assets into Sage software and ensuring proper computation of tax depreciation for fixed assets
  • Analyze process to determine optimal use of Sage for Tangible Property Tax data
  • Other
  • Manage the Tax Calendar to ensure timely completion of all items
  • Analyzing data from GL and other internal systems for tax planning, compliance and audits
  • Coordinating with outside tax consultants and internal personnel in the US and Germany to ensure completion of all tax returns and collection of all required data
  • Provide timely and accurate responses to tax-related questions and requests for information from other departments
  • Perform tax planning
  • Monitor various tax news sources to keep updated on tax law changes that affect the Company
  • Document processes

What you’ll need:

  • BS/BA in Accounting, Finance or Tax
  • Masters in Taxation and/or CPA are not required, but considered desirable
  • At least 4-7 years of tax-related experience, including prior experience at a Tax Manager level
  • Strong working knowledge of tax compliance requirements and tax technical areas
  • Ability to problem solve, research issues, draw appropriate conclusions, and document tax issues and work performed
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines
  • Prior experience in retail, hospitality or tangible property rental industries is preferred
  • Proficiency in Excel and Word required, including advanced knowledge of Excel such as complex formulas and pivot tables
  • Prefer working knowledge of pulling reports from a general ledger software (SAP)
  • Knowledge of Sovos, Vertex or Sage/FAS fixed asset software is a plus
  • Candidate must be a motivated self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently
