Corporate Counsel - Employment Law

Sixt is looking to add a Corporate Counsel to our legal team to support the continuous growth of the company. The Corporate Counsel position will offer a truly unique, hands-on opportunity unavailable to most up-and-coming attorneys. In this position you will have the chance to lead your own projects and work as the legal liaison on a multitude of business ventures. This specific role will concentrate on employment related matters and supporting the People Management department with their legal support needs. However, this position will have the opportunity to assist on other matters and other practice areas as well including corporate law, compliance, risk analysis, drafting/negotiation contracts and documents related to fleet purchasing and selling processes, airport relations, service agreements, environmental issues, end-user agreements, corporate sales, and numerous others. You will be working on, and independently leading, assignments that senior level attorneys, in the firm environment (and in most in-house environments), would not have the opportunity to work on. Through this position you will get the chance to work and correspond with partner level outside counsels who are leaders in their respective areas of law and hand in hand with experienced attorneys from our German parent company. As an attorney for Sixt you will have the unique combination of working in an entrepreneurial, startup business environment while working for one the largest rent a car companies in the world.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Be the legal team lead on all employment and labor disputes within the company
  • Be the primary liaison with external employment counsel on escalated matters and any other employment and labor related topics being handled by external counsel (including EEOC, DOL, OSHA and state/local agency related hearings)
  • Work hand in hand with the People Management department to ensure day to day compliance with all reporting, wage, and other related employment laws and regulations (i.e. compliance with Title VII, ADAAA, FLSA, FMLA and state/local sick leave laws, FCRA, multistate drug testing issues; enforcement of restrictive covenants, etc.)
  • Regularly review and revise internal policies and procedures to ensure nationwide regulatory compliance
  • Provide assistance and support to People Management with employee compensation, benefits, ERISA and immigration matters
  • Prepare and review a variety of legal documents, including lease agreements, asset-purchase agreements, corporate sales agreements, employment agreements, vendor agreements, etc.
  • Evaluate potential agreements for compliance with applicable laws and provide legal risk analysis
  • Review business practices for compliance issues and respond to government inquires
  • Negotiate and interact with opposing counsel, service providers, and various other vendors outside of the company
  • Advise and counsel individual departments within Sixt and its members to anticipate, identify, and manage liability areas and legal exposure
  • Collaborate extensively with the legal team and participate in various meetings and telephone conferences
  • Coordinate with outside counsel to address complex legal issues
  • Utilize business judgment in developing legal strategies.

Your Qualities

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school required
  • Member of a State Bar required
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of legal experience
  • Previous employment and labor law experience
  • Previous experience working in an in-house environment is a plus
  • Must have basic computer navigation skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
  • Demonstrate strong written and oral communication, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Must have sound and practical business judgment, ability to think strategically
  • Must have the ability to adapt and self-motivate in a fast-paced, complex environment
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritize and multi-task for various projects under very tight deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills required
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Must have the ability to manage stressful or unusual situations
  • Willingness to work as a car rental agent at a local branch for at least two weeks to gain a better understanding of Sixt’s core business
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and not require work authorization sponsorship by our company for this position now or in the future
  • Proficiency in English, and the ability to communicate in other languages (German, Spanish, etc.) is a plus
